Sustainability is a Style!

When I see people talking about sustainable fashion or even consider writing about it at this very moment, the first thing that appears in my mind is judgment! Judging people for what they are wearing, evaluating the situation. Do they actually give a F*? or is it all just a marketing talk?

For instance, that sweater the woman is wearing at this fashion sustainability conference looks like merino wool. The environmental damage isn’t so bad if the cleaning process is using bio-scouring and bio-polishing. (It makes a difference. Global annual wool production is about 2 million tons and 60% is that wool is used for garments).  Was mulesing performed on those poor sheep? Maybe it wasn’t so bad: maybe the flock size of the farm was manageable to prevent flystrike and those beautiful merino sheep didn't have to go through the process of removing the skin from their buttocks!

Upon second glance, I wonder: Maybe it is a material cocktail; 65% polyester, 30% wool and 5% Elastane? Oh dear, how do you recycle them back into clothes?

And yet, wool is not vegan! -  Each of us has his/her own values. Some of us prefer a life without animal products like wool (includes; cashmere, shearling, angora, shahtoosh, pashmina, mohair, qiviut), silk, leather (including suede) fur, feathers (including down), horn, shell or snakeskin; due to various reasons. How the animals are kept in farms and the cows are being the major source of Methane and Global warming and other harmful chemical processes of leather goods. Being a vegan is very admirable but limits our conscious choices in fashion drastically.

Unless that wool sweater she is wearing is vintage. A precious second or third life! Even acceptable by some vegans. Environment thanks you for second-hand shopping or clothing exchange! So, the manufacturers need to focus on the quality and physical and emotional durability of the garment to be able to support end-consumers in that path.

In general, it is not the material itself that is unsustainable but the processes that are applied by man to grow, capture and make it wearable, knittable or weavable in a commercial way.

Any design, material or manufacturing decision of a big brand like Zara or H&M impact the Environment in a major way, compared to mini brands like Prancing Leopard Organics. But we believe that any positive impact is important at this point. We do give a f* about all our manufacturing processes and material choices. Sustainability is our style!
